Each track radiates confidence, blending experimental textures with smooth vocal delivery, while the EP’s production elevates its sonic richness, offering listeners an immersive journey through innovative soundscapes. The artist’s charisma shines through every verse, demonstrating a maturity and versatility that belies his debut status. New Pope positions OJESSY as a boundary-pushing force, capable of transforming personal reflection into universally engaging music, signaling a bright trajectory in contemporary Afrobeats and beyond.
OJESSY, originally from Ondo State, Nigeria, has been crafting music since 2005, inspired by the late Nigerian rapper Dagrin. Over the years, he has developed a distinctive style he describes as Afro Trap, a new and different approach that combines the edge of Trap Naija with smooth, introspective lyrics. His influences include global heavyweights such as Future, Travis Scott, Gunna, and Lil Baby, alongside his early Nigerian roots.
For years, OJESSY kept his creations close, writing songs daily and recording in his personal studio, equipped with everything needed to bring his ideas to life. His work remained private until a pivotal moment late last year sparked a deeper drive to share it with the world. He explains:
“I’ve been writing songs every single day of my life, pouring my thoughts, emotions, and experiences into music, but I never shared any of it with the world. For years, my work lived only in my notebooks and in the walls of my personal studio, equipped with all the tools I need to bring my ideas to life. Recently, an event in my life sparked a deeper drive to finally put my music out there. It made me realise that my songs could resonate with others, inspire, or simply connect with people in ways I hadn’t imagined. After years of perfecting my craft and refining my sound, I’ve decided it’s time to release my work and let the world hear the music I’ve been creating every day.”
He has collaborated with renowned producers including Cheeky Chizzy, Psycho Beat, Xtra Pro, and Del B, bringing polished production to his vision. One of his most memorable moments came in 2010 when he performed at the Mare Festival in Idanre, Ondo State.
