Kesha has officially released an early-career video that spent years outside her authorized catalog, reconnecting Backstabber with the moment that produced it.

The Kesha “Backstabber” video arrived on October 26, giving a song from her debut album Animal a newly official visual home. Rather than filming a contemporary remake, Kesha has returned to footage made before her breakthrough transformed her career.

According to Dork, Syndrome directed the production in September 2009. A version later circulated online, but the current premiere is the official release of that original video, not a first glimpse of an entirely unknown song.

Kesha has described making it as an act of determination. Recalling the shoot on Instagram, she said she wanted “Backstabber” to become a single and worked through the night with friends, who handled their own makeup and styling.

That account gives the release a personal dimension beyond the archive date. The singer described it as her first music video and a record of her life before everything changed, while her comments about the long delay stopped short of a full explanation.

The return also has a physical counterpart: a red-and-black, knife-shaped seven-inch record through Vertigo Vinyl. “Backstabber” occupies the A-side, with “Cannibal” on the reverse, bringing two familiar early songs together in an unusually shaped edition.

The distinction between old material and a new release matters here. Animal introduced “Backstabber” in 2010; the October premiere gives its original visual an official place alongside the music, with Kesha herself explaining why that opportunity still matters to her.
