Q: What is your name and what city do you rep?
A.B. Slater, I’m from Harlem New York.
Q: Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
My latest release Sweet Dreams was inspired by the original Beyonce classic of the same name. I always liked that track and wanted to add my touch to it. Visually, I wanted to replicate having dancers in sync with me and the track.
Q: What is unique about you and your music?
I think my influences alone separate me from other artists. I’m influenced by more than just hip-hop music. From a young age, I was exposed to pop, soft rock, R&B, freestyle music, soul, Spanish salsa, and comedy albums like Eddie Murphy’s “Delirious” and “Raw.”
Q: What shaped your music? My life experiences shaped my music because
I make music like journaling. Every day is a different mood or feeling, and I write how I’m feeling every day.
Q: When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
I fell in love with music when I was about eight years old, and I never fell out of love with it.
Q: What type of music do you listen to?
I let my mood decide what I listen to when I can control the music. If not, I like happy, party-uplifting music. I want to feel it.
Q: What inspires you to write music? Emotions.
Q: What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
When I’m not working on music, I’m working on the business of it. There is always something to create or edit and touch up on. From merch to websites to all artist-related material.
Q: Happiness to you is…
Being able to control my own time.
Q: What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
Nobody in this business is your friend. They can be friendly but know that everyone is trying to get somewhere or someplace, and they are not going to help you get there before them. Think of it like a job fair; you can meet cool people and get along, but at the end of the day, you are all there for a job, and nobody is gonna give you their spot.
Q: Tell us about your upcoming projects…
Right now, I’m working on two albums, one called “The Coverboy Playlist” and another titled “Champion Lover.” The latter will be original production, and “The Coverboy Playlist” will be me putting my signature touch on songs that inspired my hip-hop journey from the 80s until present day. So, “The Coverboy Playlist” project is also a homage to 50 years of hip-hop.
Q: Where do we find your music/music projects?
