Chance the Rapper has secured a second major court victory over his former manager, although the final amount owed has not been settled.
Chance the Rapper has prevailed on a breach-of-fiduciary-duty claim against former manager Pat Corcoran, adding another ruling to a dispute that has stretched across nearly six years. Cook County Circuit Court Judge James E. Hanlon Jr. issued the decision on October 13, following the rapper’s separate jury-trial victory in March.
According to Chance’s attorneys at Jenner & Block, the judge found that Corcoran received undisclosed payments from merchandise vendors while also collecting management compensation on the same business. The court ordered him to surrender those vendor payments and forfeit the 15 percent management compensation tied to merchandising during the relevant period.
The ruling also addresses ownership of ChanceRaps.com. Jenner & Block says Corcoran was directed to transfer the domain to Chance within 14 days, extending the outcome beyond money to an online property connected to the artist’s name and business.
Reports have placed the possible financial recovery around or above $1.5 million, but that figure should not be confused with a finalized payout. XXL reports that a November 30 status hearing will address the calculations, with the amount and any additional interest still requiring resolution.
Corcoran’s camp has emphasized a different part of the decision. In a statement to XXL and Rolling Stone, his spokesperson said the court rejected Chance’s claim for more than $10 million in damages and maintained that further proof of harm remained necessary within the limited merchandise issues identified by the court.
The latest decision concerns the duties Corcoran owed while managing Chance’s career, rather than simply revisiting the contract claims a jury considered earlier this year. For now, the clearest outcome is a ruling in the rapper’s favor on fiduciary duty, alongside specific repayment and transfer requirements, with the final financial total still outstanding.
