The Chicago artist is considering a shorter stage name as he reflects on his attachment to rap and his changing relationship with personal exposure.
Chance The Rapper is weighing a name change that would leave him known simply as The Rapper. He discussed the idea with Raven-Symoné and Miranda Maday on the October 1 episode of Tea Time, during a conversation about music, identity and his career.
“I’m gonna take off the ‘Chance,’” he said. “I just wanna be The Rapper.” He explained that the possibility has occupied his thoughts and connects to his love of language, with writing and performance central to how he sees himself.
Chance also described the personal dimension attached to his current name. After giving listeners intimate glimpses of his relationships and experiences, he said he now feels more drawn to exploring subjects that are not always so closely tied to his own life.
The name itself dates back to a girl he knew in high school, he recalled. Although people have encouraged him to move beyond the rapper label as his career expanded, his explanation emphasized a continued attachment to hip-hop rather than a desire to leave that identity behind.
That pride has a longer history. In a 2017 GQ interview, Chance recalled his father suggesting he call himself Chance the Artist, but he argued that rappers should be able to introduce themselves proudly without substituting another professional description.
The conversation arrives during his Coloring Book 10 Year Anniversary Tour, while his latest album, Star Line, was released on August 15, 2025. For now, the shorter name remains an idea he is discussing, with no formal rebrand or launch date announced in the interview.
