Quavo and T.I. have joined forces on “Backwards,” a new Atlanta collaboration produced by Pharrell Williams and released Friday, September 11.
The track brings together two rappers from different generations of Atlanta hip-hop, with Quavo handling the melodic center while T.I. adds a veteran presence. “Backwards” is the latest preview of Quavo’s upcoming album QRÖMELIFE.
The single follows “HAAVIN” and “Trance (Walk It Down)” in Quavo’s current rollout. The latter previously introduced another piece of the QRÖMELIFE campaign as the album moved closer to release.
Pharrell is closely tied to the project, serving as executive producer on the full album. His involvement gives the rollout a consistent creative thread, and “Backwards” extends that partnership while adding T.I. to the guest lineup.
The record also works as a meeting point between two major chapters of Atlanta rap. T.I. helped push Southern trap into the mainstream in the 2000s, while Quavo later became one of the defining voices of the city’s next generation through Migos.
QRÖMELIFE is scheduled to arrive October 2 through Quality Control/Motown. Until then, “Backwards” gives listeners another look at the sound Quavo and Pharrell have been developing for the album.
