For reasons beyond our comprehension, BMW has painted a 2020 X6 in what is known as “the world’s blackest black,” Vantablack VBx2. Invented by Surrey NanoSystems, Vantablack absorbs over 99 percent of light, converting it into heat.
We’re not scientists but something tells us this isn’t a car you wanna park outside in the summer sun for too long. The car will be officially debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, and BMW has announced that the spray-painted vehicle will be an exclusive show car.
The BMW X6 is painted with the Vantablack VBx2 pigment, which was developed for scientific and architectural projects and differs slightly from the original color. Vantablack makes objects appear two-dimensional and lose all design details, meaning that it would be unsuitable for a car. The Vantablack VBx2 variant used by BMW, however, allows a small amount of reflection while still taking away the car’s three-dimensional appearance.
According to BMW, the one-off X6 Coupé is the first and only car to be covered in any Vantablack variant. Other highlights of the car include its Iconic Glow kidney grille, twin headlights and tailights. Take a first look at the car in the “world’s blackest black” in the gallery above.
