NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For Yaz, building a career has never been about choosing one identity over another.
The Newport News, Virginia, multi-genre artist, entrepreneur, mother and wife, now currently residing in the Bay Area of California is developing House of Yaz, a creative brand that brings together handcrafted luxury crowns and music rooted in empowerment, authenticity and cultural pride.
At the center of both her art and business is a simple philosophy: women should not have to limit themselves to a single role in order to succeed.
Yaz creates music for women navigating many of the same responsibilities she does, from mothers pursuing goals after their children have gone to sleep to wives balancing relationships with ambition and entrepreneurs working toward financial independence on their own terms.
Rather than building her image around outside validation, Yaz wants her work to encourage women to recognize their own value, develop independence and pursue every part of themselves without apology.
Building House of Yaz
House of Yaz extends that message beyond music. The brand features handcrafted crowns designed as wearable art, with each piece representing power, heritage and individuality.
For Yaz, the crown is more than a product. It is a symbol of the many identities a woman can carry at once.
Her message is that a woman can simultaneously be a mother, wife, business owner, artist and leader without treating any one of those identities as incompatible with the others.
Alongside the fashion side of House of Yaz, Yaz creates music spanning conscious hip-hop, R&B and pop, giving the brand a broader purpose than a conventional artist platform.
Finding Her Own Creative Identity
That philosophy emerged after years of trying to determine where she belonged creatively.
Yaz began her performance journey in club environments before gradually moving toward more conscious music and cultural events. The transition pushed her to reconsider what she wanted to communicate as an artist instead of continuing to create according to expectations that no longer reflected who she was becoming.
She eventually realized that restricting herself to one musical genre created a similar problem.
While the industry often encourages artists to establish one clearly defined sound, Yaz’s creativity moves wherever the song requires, whether that means conscious hip-hop, R&B or pop.
Instead of treating that versatility as a marketing obstacle, she began recognizing it as one of her defining strengths.
Her performances have included an event during BET Awards Weekend in 2025, along with appearances at Black cultural festivals and empowerment events across the East Coast.
Those stages reinforced the direction she wanted her career to take: music connected not only to entertainment, but also to community, resilience and cultural celebration.
Turning Comparison Into Purpose
The evolution did not come without challenges.
Like many independent creatives, Yaz struggled with comparing the pace of her career to the progress she saw from others. For years, she felt as though she was falling behind.
Eventually, her perspective changed.
Instead of seeing those years as lost time, Yaz began viewing them as a period spent learning the business, strengthening her craft and developing the resilience required to build something independently.
That shift also shaped the direction of House of Yaz.
Rather than chasing short-term attention, Yaz wants to build a lasting brand centered on ownership, financial empowerment and legacy.
A Vision Beyond Music
Her ambitions extend far beyond recording and performing.
Over the next several years, Yaz envisions House of Yaz growing into a broader lifestyle company incorporating fashion, home goods and experiential events.
She imagines pop-up experiences where women can be physically crowned, watch live performances and connect with fellow entrepreneurs and creators.
Education is also part of the long-term vision.
Yaz hopes to eventually create workshops and resources that help women understand branding, monetize their creativity and build generational wealth.
A Personal New Chapter
Music remains at the center of that expansion.
Yaz is currently developing what she describes as her most personal project yet, an album intended to serve as a reintroduction after years spent searching for her artistic identity.
The project is expected to move between conscious hip-hop, R&B and pop, while drawing inspiration from sounds across the African diaspora.
Its subject matter mirrors Yaz’s own experiences: balancing ambition with family, rediscovering personal power, celebrating Black joy, building financial stability and remaining authentic while pursuing success.
For Yaz, those themes are inseparable from motherhood and marriage.
Rather than viewing family life as something standing in the way of an artistic career, she sees it as part of what gives that career meaning.
Success, in her view, cannot be measured only through streams, album sales or performances. It can also be found in her children watching her pursue her goals and in creating something lasting alongside her husband.
Redefining Legacy
That perspective has shaped Yaz’s definition of legacy.
She wants House of Yaz to eventually represent more than her individual career. Her goal is for younger generations to see a model for pursuing creative, personal and financial ambitions without believing they must diminish one part of themselves to make room for another.
Ultimately, Yaz wants the brand to become synonymous with empowerment, cultural pride, ownership and unapologetic self-expression.
As she continues preparing new music and expanding House of Yaz, she is positioning everything around one central idea:
There is no requirement to wear only one crown.
For the women she hopes to reach, including artists, mothers, wives, entrepreneurs and dreamers, Yaz wants her career to demonstrate that ambition does not have to come at the expense of identity.
Sometimes, the goal is not deciding which version of yourself gets to succeed.
It is learning how to let all of them exist, grow and succeed at once.
