Upclose and Personal With $um1

Q: You’ve already achieved so much at just 22 years old. Can you tell us a little about your journey so far?

$um1: It’s been an exciting ride, honestly. I’ve had the opportunity to go on tour with Montana of 300, and I’ve opened for artists like Big Boogie and Sleepy Hallow. Those moments really taught me a lot about the industry and how to engage with fans. It’s been incredible to perform in different cities, from St. Louis to Iowa City, and connect with people who vibe with my music.

Q: You mentioned the tour with Montana of 300. That sounds like a huge milestone. How was that experience?

$um1: It was amazing! That tour really showed me what it’s like to be on the road, performing night after night. The energy was unreal. Every crowd was different, but they all shared the same excitement for the music. I’ll never forget the show at The Max Entertainment Complex in Iron Mountain—just a crazy night. Performing alongside Montana and seeing how he connects with the audience was a huge learning experience for me.

Q: You’ve opened for some pretty big names already, but there’s also a lot of talk about you staying independent. You turned down a deal with Sony Music—what led to that decision?

$um1: Yeah, turning down the Sony offer was a big decision. But for me, it wasn’t just about the business side of things. It’s about staying true to my vision and having control over my music and my image. I’ve always believed that I can build my career without compromising who I am. So, turning down that deal was about preserving my authenticity and creative freedom. I think that resonates with people. In the end, it’s not about the label, it’s about the message and the music.

Q: Staying independent seems to be working for you. You’ve had some impressive streaming numbers—150k views per year on Spotify, and your video for Mind Games is doing really well. How do you feel about the success so far?

$um1: Honestly, I’m grateful. But I’m just getting started. The fact that Mind Games has connected with so many people means a lot to me. Music is personal, and when people feel what you’re putting out, it’s rewarding. But I know there’s more to come. I’ve got so much unreleased music I can’t wait to share with everyone. I want to keep pushing the boundaries and showing that you don’t have to follow the traditional route to make an impact.

Q: You’re about to perform with Finesse2Tymes—what can fans expect from that show?

$um1: It’s going to be fire! I’m bringing new, unreleased tracks to the stage. I’m really excited to perform some of the new material I’ve been working on. My fans have been so supportive, and I can’t wait to share what I’ve been cooking up. Every show is a chance for me to connect with the audience on a deeper level, and this one will be no different. Expect high energy and some raw emotion.

Q: You’ve really built a strong connection with your fans. What’s the message you want them to take away from your music?

$um1: My message is simple: stay true to yourself. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you’ve been through, greatness is in you. I want people to know that no matter the obstacles, you can rise. I’ve always believed in doing things my own way, and I want my fans to feel empowered by that. It’s not about following a trend—it’s about making your own path.

Q: What’s next for $um1? Where do you see yourself in the next year or two?

$um1: I’m just focused on growing, both as an artist and as a person. I’m always learning, always evolving. I’ve got more music in the works, and I want to continue performing and connecting with fans across the country. My goal is to reach more people with my music, whether it’s through a new single or a live show. I want to keep pushing the boundaries and see where this journey takes me.

Q: To wrap up, what advice would you give to other young artists trying to make it in the industry today?

$um1: My advice is to stay authentic. Don’t let the pressure of the industry change who you are. Focus on building something real and staying true to your vision. It’s going to be hard, but if you keep your heart in it and work hard, you’ll see the results. The journey isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it.

Q: Lastly, where can people stay updated on your upcoming shows and music?

$um1: People can follow me on Instagram @theonlysum1 to stay up to date with everything. I’ve got some big things coming, and I want everyone to be a part of it. I’m thankful for all the love and support, and I can’t wait to share what’s next.
