For Meliyah Kenea, music has never been something she simply decided to pursue. It has been woven into who she is for as long as she can remember — from singing in church as a child to discovering her own sound, identity, and presence as an artist.
Drawing from the emotional depth of R&B, the magnetism of classic performers, feminine energy, and her own life experiences, Meliyah is building an artistic world that feels both timeless and personal.
Her goal isn’t simply to make songs people listen to. She wants to create music that becomes attached to memories — the song someone plays when they’re falling in love, healing from heartbreak, getting ready to go out, or simply trying to understand themselves.
Meliyah Kenea isn’t interested in being another voice in the room.
She wants to be the feeling people remember after the music stops

1. Hi, Meliyah. How are you today?
Meliyah: I’m feeling really good. I’m in a really creative space right now, and I feel like there’s a lot happening for me at this point in my life. I’m excited about what’s ahead.
2. Where are you from?
Meliyah: I’m from Dallas, Texas — born and raised. I moved to Las Vegas when I was around 17, so both places really shaped me in different ways.
Texas gave me a lot of my foundation — the Southern hospitality, the culture, the music, the way people carry themselves. Las Vegas exposed me to a completely different world. It’s such a fast, colorful, unpredictable place, and I think both environments gave me pieces of who I am today.
I carry where I’m from with me, but I’m also becoming my own person through every place and experience I’ve had.
3. When did you start making music, and what or who were your early influences?
Meliyah: I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I started singing in a church group in Houston when I was around 11 and continued until I was about 14. So music was introduced to me through something very emotional and spiritual.
As I got older, I started discovering the artists who made me want to become a performer, not just a singer. Aaliyah is a huge influence for me because of the way she carried herself — there was something effortless, feminine, mysterious, and timeless about her.
Michael Jackson is another major influence because he understood that being an artist is bigger than just making music. It was the voice, the movement, the visuals, the emotion, the performance — the entire experience.
I’m also inspired by artists like Kehlani and by R&B as a whole. I love music that feels intimate and honest. At the end of the day, I don’t want to sound like anyone else. I want to take everything that inspires me and turn it into something that is unmistakably Meliyah.
4. What skills do you think artists need to be successful?
Meliyah: Consistency, confidence, discipline, and the ability to evolve.
You have to believe in yourself before everybody else does. There are going to be moments where nobody sees the vision yet, and you have to be able to keep going anyway.
I also believe in having discipline in chaos. This industry can be exciting and unpredictable, but you still have to take care of your body, your mind, your voice, and your craft.
Talent can open a door, but discipline keeps you in the room.
And honestly, I think you have to stay connected to God and who you are outside of the industry. Fame can’t become your identity. Your character has to be stronger than the attention.
5. How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends?
Meliyah: I pay attention, but I don’t want to be consumed by trends.
I love seeing what people are doing creatively and understanding where music and culture are going, but I’m more interested in taking inspiration and making it my own.
I think the artists who really last are the ones who create something that people can recognize years later. I want to be influenced by the culture without becoming a product of whatever is popular for the moment.
6. When performing, what techniques do you use to engage the audience?
Meliyah: My energy. My aura.
I feel like there’s something naturally magnetic about me when I’m performing. I don’t have to force it. I want people to feel my presence before I even sing the first note.
For me, performing is bigger than standing on a stage and singing songs. It’s about commanding the room, connecting with people, using my body, my expression, my voice, and my energy to create an experience.
I want people to leave saying, “There was just something about her.”
7. What would you say is the most rewarding part of being an artist?
Meliyah: Making people feel.
That’s always going to be the biggest thing for me.
Music has gotten me through things. Singing has always been a way for me to process emotions and express things I couldn’t always put into words. So being able to give that feeling back to somebody else is incredibly meaningful to me.
I love R&B because it’s intimate. A song can become attached to a person, a relationship, a season of your life, even a specific memory.
I want to make music that makes somebody fall in love. Music that makes a woman feel beautiful. Music that helps somebody through heartbreak. Music that makes a couple reconnect. Music that somebody plays years later and suddenly remembers exactly where they were when they first heard it.
I don’t just want people to hear my music.
I want them to experience it.
8. How does your content online make you stand out as an artist?
Meliyah: My content is an extension of who I am.
It’s centered around femininity, lifestyle, beauty, confidence, sensuality, faith, and just experiencing life as a woman.
I want people to come across my page and immediately feel something. I want them to see the woman behind the music — not just an artist trying to promote a song.
There’s a softness to me, but there’s also power. I’m feminine, but I’m not afraid to take up space. I can be glamorous, playful, sensual, spiritual, emotional, adventurous — all of those things can exist in the same woman.
That’s what I want my world to feel like.
9. What makes you different from other artists?
Meliyah: I think it’s the combination of everything that makes me, me.
My voice is one part of it, but it’s also my energy, my femininity, my personality, my story, and the way I connect with people.
I don’t want to be put into one box. I’m an R&B artist, but I’m also a performer. I’m a woman with a very strong sense of identity. I care about visuals, fashion, movement, storytelling, and the feeling behind everything I create.
I think there’s something timeless about the kind of artist I want to become. I don’t want to chase being famous. I want to build something that has longevity.
When people see Meliyah Kenea, I want them to know they’re looking at a whole world — not just a singer.
10. Last question: When you’re not making music, where can we find you?
Meliyah: Probably somewhere outside.
I love hiking and being in nature. There’s something about being surrounded by God’s creation that brings me back to myself. It reminds me that there’s a whole world outside of everything we’re constantly trying to accomplish.
Otherwise, you’ll probably find me with my sisters — shopping, laughing, watching movies, eating, being ridiculous, just enjoying life.
I’m actually a very simple person underneath everything. I love beautiful experiences, I love my family, I love God, I love music, and I love feeling alive.
If I had to choose one place, though, probably hiking. That’s where I feel the most grounded.
