Tru:FRAZ’s debut album, Sesh Fiend Confession Tape, is exactly as candid as its title suggests. Across 16 tracks, the UK/New Zealand hip-hop artist opens the door on one of the most chaotic periods of his life, turning experiences with partying, addiction, relationships, grief, self-destruction and mental battles into a collection of deeply personal confessions.
Rather than presenting the past as a polished story with everything neatly explained, Tru:FRAZ allows the contradictions to remain. The album moves between serious reflection and dark humour, reflecting the different sides of the personality at its centre. As Tru:FRAZ describes it, Fraser is the human underneath it all, Fraz is the artist who turns the madness into art, while Frazzle is often responsible for creating the madness in the first place.
That tension gives the project its identity. There is vulnerability throughout, but it is balanced by an awareness of the absurdity that can exist alongside difficult experiences. The recurring idea of trying to find balance is particularly fitting, summed up by Tru:FRAZ’s phrase, “detox to retox”.
Tracks including “Letter To My Soul”, “Stress”, “Where U Been?” and “MAD” each carry particular significance within the album’s story. “Letter To My Soul” represents one of the project’s most personal moments, while “Stress” is Tru:FRAZ’s own favourite. “Where U Been?” marks his first official single, and “MAD” now serves as the project’s focus track.
The album’s emotional foundations also extend beyond the immediate chaos of its subject matter. Tru:FRAZ’s English and New Zealand identities, memories of his father and the loss of Chloe, known as Sploosh, all form part of the wider story behind the record.
Ultimately, Sesh Fiend Confession Tape feels less like an attempt to close a chapter than a decision to finally put that chapter into words. Five years into his current musical journey, Tru:FRAZ has transformed a difficult period into a body of work he can call his own. As a debut, it opens the door to what he describes as Chapter 1.
