Tay Keith Died From Accidental Drug Overdose, Autopsy Report Says

Tay Keith’s cause of death has been confirmed as an accidental drug overdose, three months after the Grammy-nominated producer was found dead in his Nashville apartment.

Tay Keith, born Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, died from a drug overdose on June 18, according to an autopsy report cited by ABC News on September 17. The Nashville medical examiner ruled his manner of death an accident.

The Office of the Medical Examiner said Keith’s cause of death involved mitragynine, 7-hydroxy mitragynine, mitragynine pseudoindoxyl and ketamine toxicity. The report described the circumstances as the “toxic effects of drugs,” with several of the listed compounds associated with kratom.

Keith was found dead at age 29 after Metro Nashville Police officers conducted a welfare check at his apartment. At the time, authorities said no foul play was suspected and the death remained unclassified while the autopsy was pending.

The Memphis-born producer became one of hip-hop’s most recognizable hitmakers through records including BlocBoy JB’s “Look Alive,” Drake’s “Nonstop” and Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.” His work on “Sicko Mode” earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song, and he later received another nomination for his production on “Rich Flex.”

Beyond his production credits, Keith founded Drumatized and remained closely connected to Middle Tennessee State University, where he graduated before later being named an honorary professor. His family said after his death that he had been committed to creating opportunities for younger artists and that his impact would continue through the music and people he supported.

The newly released autopsy findings provide the official cause and manner of death after months of uncertainty surrounding Keith’s passing. The medical examiner classified the death as accidental and attributed it to drug toxicity rather than foul play.
