Pink Clarifies Her Position After Backlash Over Macklemore ‘Free Palestine’ Controversy

Pink has issued a detailed statement clarifying her views after facing backlash for resharing criticism of Macklemore’s pro-Palestine message during Ed Sheeran’s New Jersey shows.

Pink addressed the controversy in a lengthy Instagram statement after previously resharing a post from StopAntisemitism that criticized Macklemore’s recent performances at MetLife Stadium. In the new statement, covered by Entertainment Weekly, she said the repost used language she did not write and would not have chosen in full.

The dispute grew out of Macklemore’s opening sets for Ed Sheeran in New Jersey, where he performed “Hind’s Hall” alongside images from Gaza and told the crowd “Free Palestine.” Macklemore later defended the message after criticism and calls from some groups to remove him from the tour.

Pink used her statement to explain that her Jewish identity is central to why she felt compelled to speak, while also pushing back on assumptions that the repost represented every part of her position. She wrote that she was born Jewish and said she would rather be challenged for her own words than judged entirely by language written by someone else.

She also drew a distinction between condemning Hamas and recognizing the rights and humanity of Palestinian civilians. Pink said Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and aspirations, while arguing that Jewish, Muslim, Palestinian and Israeli people should not be made to feel unsafe or targeted because of their identity.

Macklemore has continued to stand by the broader message behind his performances. In response to the criticism surrounding his MetLife appearances, he shared concert footage and wrote, “Wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial,” framing his position as one centered on dignity and equal treatment.

The latest statement makes Pink’s position more detailed than her initial repost and the memes she shared in the days that followed. Rather than withdrawing from the discussion, she emphasized that complex political and humanitarian issues cannot be reduced to a social-media repost or a single slogan.

The exchange has become a wider conversation about artists using stadium stages and social media to address the Israel-Gaza war. For Pink, the new statement is an attempt to put her own words on the record after days in which much of the debate centered on what others believed her repost meant.
