N.O.R.E. is facing a new civil lawsuit from Carmen Bryan, who alleges the rapper and Drink Champs host sexually assaulted her at a nightclub in 1999.

N.O.R.E., whose real name is Victor Santiago, has been accused of sexual assault in a lawsuit filed by Carmen Bryan, the author and former music-industry employee who shares a daughter with Nas. The allegation concerns an incident Bryan says occurred at a nightclub in 1999, according to a September 9 report from Rolling Stone.

Bryan also alleges that she told Jay-Z about the alleged assault at the time and urged him not to confront N.O.R.E. over it. Her account places the allegation within the same period when she was personally connected to several prominent figures in New York hip-hop, relationships she later discussed publicly and in her 2006 memoir It’s No Secret.

The claims in Bryan’s lawsuit are allegations and have not been proven in court. As of Wednesday evening, no public response from N.O.R.E. addressing Bryan’s new accusation could be verified. The case is civil, and the filing itself does not establish that the alleged conduct occurred.

Bryan has long been associated with a particularly turbulent chapter in New York rap history because of her relationship with Nas and her later relationship with Jay-Z, which became part of the backdrop to the rappers’ early-2000s feud. In her memoir and subsequent interviews, she has spoken extensively about her experiences around the music industry during that era.

N.O.R.E., meanwhile, has spent much of the past decade building a second career in media through Drink Champs. The veteran Queens rapper was also recently at the center of a public dispute with DJ Vlad, which 24Hip-Hop covered in a story about their escalating feud.

Bryan’s new lawsuit brings a serious allegation from more than two decades ago into the present legal system. Further details, including any formal response from N.O.R.E. or his representatives, will be important as the case moves forward.
