What is your name and what city do you rep?
JayLifted, I’m from the north side of Chicago, the Waukegan area. This has always been home to me. But born in queen New York.
Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
The inspiration behind this album was really just putting together a cohesive project that flows. I wanted to give my fans that lifestyle music. That everyday get up and get it kinda music. But also display more lyrics with this one. I think my fans know I’m more than capable to do the melodic records. I definitely enjoy that as well, but I approached this project differently. Last year I went on a crazy single run, it’s been two years since I dropped an EP or album. So I just took my time with it.
What is unique about you and your music?
I feel like I’m the only belizean rapper at the moment putting on for Chicago/Waukegan. I take pride in that, being independent doing things my own way. I think more artist should embrace that route. You don’t need a label when you know how to get it.
What shaped your music?
Everyday life shapes my music, I’m inspired by everyday shit. My family comes from Belize, from a place that still fights poverty in most parts. How could I not be inspired by the things I didn’t have growing up. I feel obligated to inspire people around me. That’s just how I was brought up. Writing music was the best way to express myself. We just stuck to it and got this far.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
I always wrote music, going way back to my freshman year of high school. Once I got to community college I said this wasn’t for me. I started going to school just to kick it in the hallways and sell mixtapes. I really never looked back after that.
What type of music do you listen to?
I listen to literally everything, anything 80’s is always in rotation. R&B, hip hop, alternative, I mean you name it. If I’m in the mood I’ll listen to it. But a couple projects that really changed my life were wiz Khalifas kush & orange juice and Dom Kennedys from the west side with love two. Those changed everything for me.
What inspires you to write music?
Everything does, my family, my friends. Everyday life really. Other people working hard to achieve there goals creative or not.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
I love basketball and video games. I’m a simple man, I do normal things. I like staying out the way and spending time with people I love. But I’d definitely say sports. Also being a business owner and having a restaurant takes up a lot of my time. I’m passionate about serving my community and the place that raised me.
Happiness to you is…
Happiness to me is all the little things, your right where yours suppose to be. Be present and appreciate what you have.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
Nobody cares dawg, put the work in and let the work speak for itself. It’s not all what it seems. If you love it go after it and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Nothing comes easy.
Tell us about your upcoming projects…
The album just dropped. Thats all I’m focused on at the moment. Remain Solid, maybe I drop an EP to close out the year. But for the time being go check out that album for me.
Where do we find you music / music projects?
