Dead Man’s Bones have ended a 17-year gap between releases, reuniting Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields under the project’s familiar name.
Dead Man’s Bones are back with their first new music since 2009. Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields released “Lost in the Night” through ANTI on October 26, reopening a collaboration that had remained quiet on record since its self-titled debut.
The return follows attempts to record in a Los Angeles studio before the pair changed settings. According to ANTI’s release announcement, the eventual session took place during a day at a farm, with a compact collection of instruments rather than a larger studio setup.
That equipment consisted of two guitars, two drum machines and two synthesizers. The account puts the emphasis on Gosling and Shields working together in a different environment, making the renewed collaboration as much part of the news as the length of the gap.
A black-and-white video accompanies the release, featuring Rain Spencer and Noah Jupe. Its nighttime imagery gives the return a visual counterpart, without requiring fans to wait for a full-length album announcement before seeing the project in motion again.
Dead Man’s Bones’ earlier live period included performances with local children’s choirs during its 2009 and 2010 touring activity. That history helps distinguish the project from Gosling’s acting career: this is the resumption of an established musical partnership, not the launch of a new celebrity side project.
No new album has been announced alongside the return. For now, “Lost in the Night” marks the concrete development: new recorded work from the duo, a new video and an end to a long silence between releases.
