Jerry Garcia’s family is planning a Bay Area cultural center that would bring his music, visual art and archives into a permanent public home.
Garcia’s family announced the proposed Jerry Garcia Music Arts Center on October 23. Jerry Garcia Music Arts is working with archival platform Starchive and coordinator Christopher McCutcheon on the Bay Area project.
Plans described in the family’s announcement include a research library, physical archive and digital preservation hub. The center would review fan-donated materials for its collection, while family heirs are invited to contribute personal records and memorabilia.
Live performance and new creative work are also part of the concept. A performance center, film-screening room and artist-in-residence program would sit alongside galleries for Garcia’s art and instruments, giving the proposed institution a role beyond exhibiting objects from the past.
Exhibitions would explore Garcia’s musical influences and innovations in concert sound. Environmental displays would address coral reefs and rainforests, alongside charitable initiatives for ocean preservation, music education and the arts.
The announcement follows August’s unveiling of Eyes of the World: The Jerry Garcia Experience, a separate immersive project. As SPIN reports, that experience is scheduled to begin in San Francisco in early 2027, combining music, artwork and recorded reflections across eight rooms before traveling to other U.S. cities.
The permanent center remains a proposal, not an announced opening. Architectural details, programming and development updates are still to come; the family has not given this separate institution the immersive exhibition’s early-2027 launch schedule.
