Kawhi Leonard returned to the spotlight in Toronto on Monday as the Raptors opened media day ahead of the 2026-27 season. The seven-time All-Star acknowledged that his return took longer than expected to become official, but he made it clear that he wants his attention on basketball rather than the circumstances surrounding the end of his Clippers tenure.

Leonard said he is ready to focus on his new chapter after a lengthy period of uncertainty delayed his ability to fully join the team. The move brings him back to the franchise he led to its only NBA championship in 2019, when he also captured his second Finals MVP award.

The 35-year-old said he likes the environment he is returning to after Toronto finished fifth in the Eastern Conference last season and pushed Cleveland to seven games in the opening round. Scottie Barnes remains the centerpiece of the current core, giving Leonard a younger All-Star partner as the Raptors attempt to make another jump.

Toronto’s coaching staff is also preparing to manage Leonard carefully over the course of the season. His availability has been a recurring storyline in recent years, but his production remains elite when he is on the floor, and the Raptors believe his championship experience can raise the ceiling of a team that already took a meaningful step forward last season.

Leonard’s return also closes a long circle in his career. After leaving Toronto for the Los Angeles Clippers following the 2019 championship run, he spent seven seasons in Southern California before the deal sending him back north was ultimately completed.

For Leonard, the message at media day was centered on what comes next rather than what happened in Los Angeles. Toronto now has one of the defining players in franchise history back in a Raptors jersey, with both sides hoping the reunion can create another serious postseason run.
