Jim Jones says Drake currently sits on one of hip-hop’s biggest thrones, while arguing the culture has never needed a single artist to rule over everyone else.
Jim Jones has put Drake at the center of the hip-hop throne conversation, naming the Toronto superstar when asked who currently holds the crown. During a recent Hot 97 appearance with Miabelle, the Dipset veteran took time to consider the question before settling on Drake, according to Complex.
“I don’t think so. I mean, right now it’s Drake. He has a throne,” Jones said after Miabelle suggested there might not be one clear choice. But he quickly made it clear that recognizing Drake does not mean he sees hip-hop as a one-king kingdom.
Jones argued that multiple artists can occupy their own thrones at the same time, comparing hip-hop’s competitive landscape to periods in history when several kingdoms existed side by side. “There were numerous amounts of kings ruling at the same time,” he said, adding that calling one rapper the absolute ruler of the entire culture does not reflect how hip-hop works.
To make his point, the Harlem rapper looked back at different eras of dominance, mentioning Jay-Z, Diddy and 50 Cent as figures who each commanded major stretches of the game. Jones said those runs prove that hip-hop power can shift from one artist or movement to another without erasing the stature of other stars.
He also gave credit to artists from the current generation, shouting out Meek Mill, Lil Baby and Future as rappers he considers kings in their own right. For Jones, the difficulty is not identifying successful artists but deciding whether anyone can truly claim the entire throne by themselves.
The comments continue a pattern of public praise Jones has given Drake. In 2025, while discussing Drake’s legacy after his battle with Kendrick Lamar, Jones compared the idea of a great artist taking a loss to Michael Jordan losing games, and his latest remarks again place Drake among the most powerful figures in rap without dismissing the rest of the field.
