Yaz Builds House of Yaz Around Music, Empowerment and the Freedom to Wear Every Crown

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For Yaz, building a career has never been about choosing one identity over another.

The Newport News, Virginia, multi-genre artist, entrepreneur, mother and wife is developing House of Yaz, a creative brand that combines handcrafted luxury crowns with music rooted in empowerment, authenticity and cultural pride.

Her approach reflects a larger philosophy behind both her art and her business: Women should not have to limit themselves to a single role in order to succeed.

Yaz creates music for women navigating many of the same responsibilities she does — mothers pursuing goals after their children have gone to sleep, wives balancing relationships with ambition and entrepreneurs working to build financial independence on their own terms.

That audience has become central to the direction of her career.

Rather than building her image around outside validation, Yaz said she wants her work to encourage women to recognize their own value, develop their independence and pursue the different parts of themselves without apology.

House of Yaz extends that idea beyond music. The brand features handcrafted crowns designed as wearable art, with each piece representing power, heritage and individuality. Alongside the fashion element, Yaz creates music spanning conscious hip-hop, R&B and pop.

The combination gives House of Yaz a broader purpose than a conventional artist brand.

For Yaz, the crown is both a product and a symbol.

Her message is that a woman can simultaneously be a mother, wife, business owner, artist and leader without treating any one of those identities as incompatible with the others.

That philosophy emerged after years of trying to determine where she belonged creatively.

Yaz began her performance journey in club environments before gradually moving toward more conscious music and cultural events. The transition required her to rethink what she wanted to say as an artist rather than continuing to create according to expectations she felt no longer represented her.

She eventually found that restricting herself to one genre presented a similar problem.

Industry expectations often encourage artists to establish a clearly defined sound, but Yaz said her creativity does not function that way. Her music can move from conscious hip-hop into R&B or pop depending on what the song requires.

Instead of seeing that versatility as a marketing obstacle, she began treating it as one of her defining strengths.

Her performances have included an event during BET Awards Weekend in 2025 as well as appearances at Black cultural festivals and empowerment events across the East Coast.

Those stages helped reinforce the direction she wanted her career to take: music connected not only to entertainment, but also to community, resilience and cultural celebration.

The evolution was accompanied by challenges.

Like many independent creatives, Yaz struggled with comparing the pace of her career to the progress she saw from others.

For years, she felt as though she was falling behind. Eventually, she began looking at those years differently, viewing them as time spent learning the business, improving her craft and developing the resilience needed to build something independently.

That shift also influenced House of Yaz.

Instead of chasing short-term attention, Yaz said she wants to build a lasting brand centered on ownership, financial empowerment and legacy.

Her ambitions stretch beyond recording and performing.

Over the next several years, Yaz envisions House of Yaz developing into a broader lifestyle company incorporating fashion, home goods and experiential events. She imagines pop-up experiences where women can be physically crowned, watch live performances and connect with fellow entrepreneurs and creators.

Education is also part of the long-term plan.

Yaz wants to eventually create workshops and resources that help women understand branding, monetize their creativity and build generational wealth.

Her music remains at the center of that expansion.

Yaz is currently developing what she describes as her most personal project yet, an album intended to serve as a reintroduction after years of searching for her artistic identity.

The project is expected to move between conscious hip-hop, R&B and pop while drawing inspiration from sounds across the African diaspora.

Its subject matter mirrors Yaz’s own experiences — balancing ambition with family, rediscovering personal power, celebrating Black joy, building financial stability and learning to remain authentic while pursuing success.

For Yaz, those themes are inseparable from motherhood and marriage.

Rather than viewing family life as something standing in the way of an artistic career, she sees it as part of what gives that career meaning. Success, in her view, is not measured solely through streams, album sales or performances.

It is also found in her children watching her pursue her goals and in creating something lasting alongside her husband.

That perspective has shaped her definition of legacy.

Yaz wants House of Yaz to eventually represent more than her individual career. She wants younger generations to see a model for pursuing creative, personal and financial goals without believing they must diminish one part of themselves to make room for another.

Her larger goal is to make the brand synonymous with empowerment, cultural pride and unapologetic self-expression.

As Yaz continues preparing new music and expanding House of Yaz, she is positioning herself around a simple idea: There is no requirement to wear only one crown.

For the women she hopes to reach — artists, mothers, wives, entrepreneurs and dreamers — Yaz wants her career to serve as evidence that ambition does not have to come at the expense of identity.

Sometimes, the goal is not choosing which version of yourself gets to succeed.

It is learning how to let all of them exist at once.
