Stephen Curry’s historic march past 4,000 career three-pointers is becoming an IMAX event, with a new documentary set to put the craft behind his shooting on the biggest screens this fall.
Stephen Curry is bringing one of basketball’s defining records to theaters with Portrait of an Artist: Stephen Curry, a new Stephen Curry IMAX documentary scheduled to debut exclusively in IMAX in October. As NBC Sports Bay Area reported, the film centers on Curry’s journey to becoming the first NBA player to reach 4,000 made three-pointers while digging into the work behind his shooting.
The documentary is directed by sports filmmaker Gotham Chopra and brings together Religion of Sports, Curry’s Unanimous Media, NBA Entertainment and IMAX. Rather than treating the milestone as a single highlight, the film is framed around the repetition, creativity and discipline that helped Curry redefine the possibilities of long-range shooting.
Curry reached 4,000 career threes in March 2025 against the Sacramento Kings, extending a record he had already owned since passing Ray Allen for the NBA’s all-time three-point lead in December 2021. The 4,000th make became another landmark in a career that has changed how teams, players and fans think about range and shot selection.
Announcing the project, Curry wrote, “We are pumped to show you all something the team has been working on.” The title also echoes the language used around his landmark 4,000th three, presenting Curry not simply as a record holder but as an artist whose technique has been built through years of precision and repetition.
IMAX had previously disclosed that Portrait of an Artist was part of its 2026 documentary slate in collaboration with the NBA, Unanimous Media and Religion of Sports. The October release now gives Curry’s record-breaking story a theatrical showcase designed to emphasize both the scale of the achievement and the details behind how he shoots.
The project arrives as Curry continues adding distance between himself and the rest of the NBA’s all-time three-point field. An exact October release date has not yet been announced, but Portrait of an Artist: Stephen Curry is expected to play exclusively in IMAX theaters when it arrives.
