Wembanyama collected 13 rebounds and six blocks, but Oklahoma City won 116-104 behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 32 points.
Victor Wembanyama’s first game of the new season brought defensive production and a difficult shooting night. Oklahoma City defeated San Antonio 116-104 at Frost Bank Center on October 20, taking the opening meeting between last season’s Western Conference finalists.
Wembanyama finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks, making one of his 13 field-goal attempts. He missed all four attempts from three-point range. His work around the basket at the defensive end could not compensate for the shortage of made shots at the other.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points for Oklahoma City, adding six rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks.
Jared McCain added 20 points for Oklahoma City, making six three-pointers.
Stephon Castle led San Antonio with 24 points and seven rebounds. He made five of his 12 three-point attempts.
San Antonio had won the teams’ previous playoff series in seven games. Tuesday’s result does not change that outcome, but it gives Oklahoma City the first victory in their new-season matchup. Wembanyama’s contrasting shooting and defensive numbers capture the Spurs’ opening-night problem: major contributions in one area were not enough to deliver a win.
