Marvel Studios has unveiled a new Avengers: Doomsday special look, shifting the spotlight firmly onto Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom as the MCU’s next massive crossover takes shape. The footage debuted during Disney’s D23 showcase and expands on material previously shown to attendees at San Diego Comic-Con. With the Avengers, Fantastic Four and legacy X-Men all moving toward the same conflict, the preview gives Doom a much clearer place at the center of the story.
The new footage offers more context for Doom through narration from Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, while also setting up a tense confrontation between the armored ruler of Latveria and Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards. According to Entertainment Weekly, the D23 presentation included Downey alongside returning Marvel stars Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. The preview also suggests that Doom’s history will carry a personal tragedy that helps shape his path toward the multiversal crisis.
One of the trailer’s biggest action beats pits Chris Hemsworth’s Thor against Doom, who stops an attack from Stormbreaker before the footage escalates further. Doom is also shown commanding an army of Sentinels, bringing the mutant-hunting machines directly into the conflict and strengthening the movie’s connection to the X-Men. Other glimpses bring characters including Ant-Man, Loki and Professor Charles Xavier into a story designed to collide several generations of Marvel heroes.
Robert Downey Jr. returning to Marvel as Doctor Doom remains the film’s defining hook after more than a decade as Tony Stark and Iron Man. The casting gives the MCU one of its most recognizable faces in an entirely different role, while the new footage emphasizes Doom as a threat powerful enough to challenge heroes across multiple realities. Rather than relying only on the surprise of Downey’s return, the latest look begins establishing the villain’s relationships, abilities and reach.
The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The sprawling cast includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Letitia Wright, Simu Liu and several other returning Marvel performers. The crossover is also positioned to lead into Avengers: Secret Wars, the next chapter in Marvel’s two-film event.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026. The new D23 footage arrives only weeks after Marvel released the movie’s first full trailer, accelerating the marketing campaign as the December release approaches. With Doom now receiving a more substantial showcase, Marvel is making the villain’s collision with the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men the central promise of its next ensemble blockbuster.
