Chris Brown is challenging the $12.9 million judgment awarded to his former housekeeper, Maria Avila, following a 2020 dog attack at his California home. The singer and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, filed a notice in Los Angeles stating their intention to request that the verdict be overturned and a new trial ordered, according to TMZ.
The judgment followed a jury’s finding that Brown was liable after Hades, a 200-pound Caucasian shepherd kept at his Tarzana residence, attacked Avila while she was taking out the trash on December 12, 2020. Avila said the incident caused serious injuries to her face and arm, requiring sutures, skin grafts and continued medical treatment.

Brown’s legal team is arguing that several issues affected the fairness of the proceedings. The filing reportedly points to alleged irregularities during the trial, possible jury misconduct, insufficient evidence supporting parts of the verdict and what the defense considers an excessive damages award.
During the trial, Brown maintained that workers at the property had been warned that the dogs were dangerous and should not be approached without security present. Avila disputed that account and testified that the attack happened without warning, leaving her with permanent disfigurement, nerve damage and difficulty working. (People.com)
A hearing concerning Brown’s planned motion for a new trial is scheduled for September 22. The judge will then consider the arguments presented by his attorneys and determine whether the verdict should remain in place, be reduced or lead to another trial.
