Independent singer-songwriter, Winter Rae, has never let anything stop her from pursuing her dreams of becoming a musician. Born and raised in a small town in Alabama, Rae’s journey to success was filled with obstacles and hardships that would have caused many to give up. However, she remained true to herself and her faith, and that has been her guiding light throughout her journey.
Rae was inspired to write music when she was living in a foster home at the age of seven. She used to come home every day from school and listen to music on her foster mother’s stereo system. She would write down the lyrics of her favorite songs in a notebook and unintentionally teach herself how to structure songs by analyzing each song she wrote down. From that, she was motivated to write her own song, and she sang it to her foster mother. The words of encouragement from her foster mother planted a seed in Rae’s heart, and she continued to nurture that seed with dedication and hard work.
Being a part of the music industry takes sacrifice, and Rae has faced her fair share of struggles along the way. In January 2017, she dropped out of college and moved to Atlanta to professionally pursue her dreams. That same year, she lost her grandmother and her older brother, and a few months later, she found out she was pregnant. It felt like the whole world was against her at that time, but she kept faith in God and in herself that no matter what was thrown at her, she would come out triumphant.
Rae’s music is for inspirational purposes only. The intention behind it is to motivate the listener to be confident in themselves BY THEMSELVES. Self-sufficiency, self-love, and independence are some of the things she promotes in her music. She’s currently working on the final touches for her album “Power,” which is coming out in late June. Her resiliency and determination to make it this far and never give up on her dreams and aspirations are what she’s most proud of.
When asked about her creative writing process, Rae stated that the first thing she needs is a dope beat. Then, she records a “mumble track,” which consists of the melody and cadence without the lyrics. She goes back and reassembles the melody by cutting the mumble track and placing it where it feels best with the beat. She then finds the words in the mumble track and punches it in where it feels right. The only thing left to do after that is background vocals, adlibs, and harmonies. This completes her process.
In the next five years, Rae thinks the music industry will be more geared towards independent artists. She believes we’re coming into a new age where there are no boundaries on genre or race. Everyone makes every kind of music, and no one is living in a box anymore. We are free to create the way we want to! Atlanta has been dubbed “Black Hollywood” and is notorious for breaking out many Hip-Hop/Rap artists, but she feels as though other genres will begin to emerge from the music mecca soon.
