Vin Diesel says the final mainline Fast & Furious movie is finally nearing production, with cameras expected to begin rolling this December after years of development.

Vin Diesel has revealed that Fast Forever is expected to start filming in December 2026, giving the long-awaited 11th mainline installment of the Fast & Furious franchise its clearest production timeline yet. Speaking to Variety at a 25th-anniversary screening of The Fast and the Furious, Diesel added one caveat, saying the plan depends on him being able to “make good on the request from the studio.”

Diesel said the finale went through four years of development and four sets of writers before reaching a version he believed was worthy of ending the saga. He also said the latest script affected him deeply, telling the audience that he was in tears by the time he finished reading it.

The update came during a Los Angeles celebration marking 25 years since the original The Fast and the Furious arrived in 2001. Diesel was joined by franchise figures including Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and Tyrese Gibson, while Meadow Walker, the daughter of late star Paul Walker, was also present for the anniversary event.

Universal Pictures currently has Fast Forever scheduled for release on March 17, 2028. The studio lists the film on its official slate as the next chapter in its longest-running movie franchise, while Diesel has repeatedly framed the project as a return to the series’ Los Angeles roots and a conclusion built around the idea of family.

There is still some uncertainty surrounding the production as it moves toward the proposed December start. Fast X director Louis Leterrier recently said he had not yet read the latest script, though he expressed hope about being involved and said the story would deliver an ending.

Fast Forever will follow the cliffhanger ending of 2023’s Fast X, which left several major characters in unresolved situations. If the December shoot moves forward as planned, the update marks a major step toward closing out more than two decades of the franchise’s central Dominic Toretto story.
