The domestic box office has crossed $7 billion for 2026, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day powering a summer surge that has put theaters well ahead of last year’s pace.
The U.S. box office has officially passed $7 billion in year-to-date ticket sales, marking one of the clearest signs yet that theatrical moviegoing is regaining momentum in 2026. According to Deadline, domestic grosses are currently running about 20% ahead of the same point in 2025, with the industry now on pace for its strongest post-pandemic year.
A major part of that rebound has come from Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The Tom Holland-led sequel remained No. 1 at the North American box office in its fourth weekend, adding another $39 million and pushing its domestic total beyond $854 million.
The film’s run has been historic from the start. Brand New Day opened with a record-setting $360 million domestically and later became the fastest movie ever to cross $800 million in North America, while also racing past $2 billion worldwide in roughly three weeks.
The broader summer slate has helped keep theaters busy beyond Spider-Man. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, has also delivered major business, while titles including Insidious: Out of the Further have given exhibitors additional depth across genres.
Summer 2026 has generated roughly $4.4 billion at the domestic box office, helping lift the overall year far above 2025. Even with that improvement, the year-to-date market remains about 7% below the comparable point in 2019, underscoring that the theatrical business has not completely returned to pre-pandemic levels.
Still, the $7 billion milestone arrives with months left in the calendar and a strong fall and holiday slate ahead. If the current pace holds, 2026 could finish as the best domestic box office year since before COVID-19 disrupted the movie business, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day standing as the defining blockbuster behind the turnaround.
