According to reports, Valve nearly earned $1 billion USD from the sale of Counter-Strike 2 loot boxes last year. Despite players being able to earn cases by simply playing the popular free-to-play tactical FPS title, many have opted to purchase cases from Steam’s community market.
Additionally, to open the cases keys must be purchased from Valve or from other players on the community market. Opening the cases grants players random cosmetic upgrades that can range from common to extremely rare
Third-party website CS2 Case Tracker’s recent 2023 Year in Review shared that Valve made an estimated $980,000,000 USD from players buying keys. The year saw 400,318,821 cases opened and 359.6 million keys consumed in Counter-Strike 2. Additionally, the estimated $980,000,000 USD does not factor in the 15 percent Valve takes from transactions on the community market which could easily push the company’s earnings well over $1 billion USD.
