Tenesi Castro: Vulnerability, Identity, and the Sound of Modern R&B

Born on February 28, 2000, in Los Angeles, Tenesi Castro is an artist whose music bridges the timeless emotion of classic R&B with the raw honesty of modern storytelling. A proud Mexican-American who identifies as bisexual and nonbinary, Tenesi creates in the space where desire meets nostalgia, weaving identity, resilience, and vulnerability into every song.

Raised in a supportive family environment, Tenesi was able to embrace their identity openly from an early age — a privilege that has shaped their artistic authenticity. That foundation gave them the freedom to experiment creatively and to use music as both expression and confession. Their artistry channels the influence of legends such as Mariah Carey, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, and Howard Hewett, while also drawing inspiration from contemporary voices like Flwr Chyld, Baby Rose, and Leon Thomas III.

Though they explored pop songwriting under the guidance of mentors who helped refine their structure and craft, Tenesi’s heart remains rooted in R&B. For them, the genre’s emphasis on storytelling and emotional honesty provides the perfect canvas to explore complex themes of love, identity, and healing.

Their latest release, “Soft and Carnal,” stands as a defining statement. The track examines sex addiction through the lens of a repeating cycle, its structure intentionally mirroring the trap of vice. Each verse begins with the hook, reinforcing the loop of compulsion, while the closing shift reveals clarity and the strength to move forward. Written in under ten minutes, the song poured out instinctively — a cathartic act of turning personal struggle into artistry.

For Tenesi Castro, music is not about chasing trends; it’s about telling the truth. Their work is timeless yet intimate, a voice for anyone navigating vulnerability, addiction, or self-discovery.
