Tamara Tunie’s lead-actress win for Beyond the Gates led a Daytime Emmy night that also recognized Ambyr Michelle, Sherri Shepherd and Keke Palmer’s KeyTV.

Tamara Tunie earned the lead-actress award at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on October 30 for playing Anita Williams Dupree in CBS’ Beyond the Gates. The recognition put the drama’s central matriarch in the spotlight at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, alongside a wider slate of winners spanning scripted series, talk television and digital programming.

For Tunie, the award adds a new chapter to a long relationship with daytime television. She began on As the World Turns in 1987, according to the Associated Press. Her portrayal of Jessica Griffin became one of her defining television roles before audiences also came to know her as medical examiner Melinda Warner on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Her career extends beyond those familiar television credits. Carnegie Mellon’s alumni profile documents her work as a producer on the Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening, her directing debut with See You in September and her portrayal of Cissy Houston in the 2022 Whitney Houston film I Wanna Dance with Somebody. The Emmy therefore recognizes a performer whose work has moved between daytime drama, prime-time television, film and Broadway.

Beyond the Gates also won through Ambyr Michelle, honored for emerging talent as Eva Thomas. CBS’ winners announcement counts four awards for the series in its first eligibility year: its two acting prizes, lighting direction, and hairstyling and makeup. The official ceremony broadcast below places those individual victories within the full evening’s presentations.

The celebration reached beyond traditional soap storytelling. Glam Through The Ages, from KeyTV Network, won Outstanding Daytime Short Form Program, with Keke Palmer listed among its executive producers in the official winners report. Its inclusion alongside established network productions shows how the awards’ categories encompass different formats rather than treating daytime television as a single kind of show.

Sherri Shepherd took Outstanding Daytime Talk Series Host for Sherri, while The Kelly Clarkson Show received the separate award for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series. Those results distinguish the work of a host from the production as a whole. Together with the acting and short-form honors, they made this an evening with several different paths to recognition for performers and creative teams.

Among the other major acting winners, Scott Clifton received the lead-actor award for Liam Spencer on The Bold and the Beautiful. Beth Maitland and Roger Howarth won supporting honors for The Young and the Restless. CBS and CBS Media Ventures reported 10 wins across their programming, including an entertainment-news award for Entertainment Tonight and main-title and graphic-design recognition for The Drew Barrymore Show.

General Hospital won the drama-series award, its 19th overall and sixth consecutive victory, according to the AP. That established streak sits alongside the newer success of Beyond the Gates, giving the results both a continuing champion and a first-year contender with multiple wins. For Tunie and her castmates, the distinction is specific: individual performances and the production’s craft were recognized, even as the top series prize went elsewhere.
