Stream King Mez Sunny Side Up, Perhaps I’m simply high on the renewed importance of lyrical prowess, but these recent batch of King Mez tracks have truly resonated.

It’s been a minute since the rapper turned heads on Dr. Dre’s Compton, where he provided vocals on “Talk About It” and “Darkside/Gone.” Now, with his upcoming Data Plan 002 on the way, Mez has dropped off a pair of welcome singles, including “Sunny Side Up.”

As the more reflective of the pair (should you curious to hear Mez feeling himself, peep “MF+G” here), “Sunny Side Up” finds Mez painting a vivid picture on his circumstances on the game and world at large.

Over shimmering guitar arpeggios, Mez waxes poetic. “America said I don’t look scholarly or like I perform lobotomies, I look more like I’m planning on performing robberies,” he spits, in the track’s opening stanza.

There’s an element of coming-of-age embedded within the instrumental, which foregoes drums in favor of space. Mez uses the room he’s given wisely, proving that while society may write off his scholarly ambition, he can still pen his prose alongside the best of them.
