The rock ballad carries a lyrical heaviness similar to the band’s 2012 hit “Demons” from their debut release, with frontman Dan Reynolds simmering on the struggles that accompany hiding pain from a lover.
The track opens gently, with Reynolds’ weighty voice laid on top of an elasticy riff. “Oh, hush, my dear, it’s been a difficult year/ And terrors don’t prey on innocent victims,” he sings, “Trust me, darlin’, trust me darlin’.”
An electronic beat then lends the chorus a pop feel. “But I’m a bad liar, bad liar,” Reynolds admits, contrasting the beginning. “Now you know, now you know/ I’m a bad liar, bad liar/ Now you know, you’re free to go.”
The bridge takes on a spacey sound, as Reynolds’ falsetto is layered over airy synths. “I can’t breathe, I can’t be/ I can’t be what you want me to be/Believe me, this one time/ Believe me,” he pleads.
