Salem, Oregon – YM Xhito, born Saul Ramirez Ramirez, is a first-generation Chicano whose journey from adversity to artistry serves as an inspiration to many. Raised in the Portland metropolitan area, Xhito shares his story not for sympathy, but to shed light on the origins of his music and purpose.
Growing up, Xhito faced numerous challenges, not solely due to his neighborhood, but rather as a result of personal choices. The tragic loss of his brother David in 2020 sent him down a dark path, leading to a series of events that would dramatically alter the course of his life. At just 15 years old, Xhito was falsely accused of crimes, which forced him to flee to Los Angeles and eventually Mexico.
Once in Mexico, Xhito found himself without financial resources. With the help of a cousin, he made his way to Houston, where he was arrested and extradited back to Oregon. His journey ultimately led him to the Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) juvenile prison, where he was originally sentenced to serve only 5 to 9 months. However, due to an oversight by a parole officer, Xhito was incarcerated until 2023.
During his time in OYA, Xhito seized the opportunity to educate himself and form meaningful connections. He developed strong relationships, particularly with members of the Black community, a connection he had never anticipated given the historical tensions. His closest friend, Nutcase, became a source of invaluable lessons about unity and personal growth.
Today, Xhito utilizes his music as a platform to challenge the notion that gangster rap is the sole genre that matters. He believes that there is more to life, more to the stories we tell, and more to what people want to hear. Xhito’s freestyle songs are crafted from the heart, raw and real, resonating deeply with his audience.
Outside of music, Xhito is actively involved in the Independent Living Program, the same program he once participated in. He works with young people, teaching them about their rights, guiding them through their struggles, and demonstrating that their past does not define their future.
YM Xhito’s journey transcends music; it is a mission to challenge the system, nurture his community, and uplift the youth. Through his art and advocacy, he embodies the power of resilience and the potential for transformation.
