Ray Mercifa Is Reviving Hip-Hop With Heart and Soul

Ray Mercifa, aka Dutch, is a proud product of The Bronx and a living testament to the enduring spirit of hip-hop. With roots tracing back to the golden era of the genre, Ray’s story mirrors the evolution of hip-hop itself. Raised in a family steeped in music—thanks to their connections with the legendary Disco Fever nightclub—Ray’s passion for music became part of his DNA. Today, he continues to channel resilience, creativity, and an infectious love for making people move to the beat.

Ray’s musical journey began in the early 1990s as part of the rap group Ruff Rugged and Raw. The group achieved early success with a hit song that resonated with fans and set the stage for a promising career. However, unforeseen challenges and industry setbacks halted their momentum. Despite these roadblocks, Ray remained undeterred. Even during tough times—including a stint in prison—he kept writing, pouring his emotions into lyrics that would later shape his comeback. Following his release, Ray took on the role of a single father, found love again, and released a mix CD that silenced doubters who believed his hit-making days were behind him.

What sets Ray Mercifa apart is his unwavering commitment to authenticity. As an artist who is legally blind, he navigates the music world with a unique perspective, staying true to themes of joy, unity, and positivity. “I’m bringing Real Hip-Hop back,” Ray proclaims. “No more violence. I want everybody to feel good.” This vision fuels his mission to create music that uplifts and energizes, a refreshing contrast to the often aggressive undertones of modern rap.

Over the years, Ray has graced some of the most iconic stages and events, including college gatherings like Freaknic, Greek Freak, and Jack the Rapper, as well as the prestigious BET Brunch in 2022. His ability to balance artistry with a sharp business mindset has allowed him to thrive in an industry known for its challenges, proving that passion and persistence can turn music into a sustainable career.

Looking ahead, Ray Mercifa’s ambitions extend beyond the recording studio. He dreams of leaving a legacy not just through his music but also for his family. His future plans include ventures in farming, real estate, and opening a nightclub where his tracks will set the dancefloor on fire. “In five years, I see myself living in the country, thriving off the land, and continuing to inspire others,” he shares.

Ray’s latest track, “Go Crazy,” is a perfect embodiment of his ethos. Designed for partygoers and club lovers, the song radiates fun and positivity, reminding listeners to let go of their worries and embrace life’s joys. “Everybody party and stop stressing. Life is beautiful no matter what’s going on,” Ray emphasizes.
