Michella Filipowitz: A Path of Love, Resilience, and Nontraditional Family Bonds

Michella Filipowitz’s life story is a true testament to how love and family can thrive in the most unexpected ways. As a model, art dealer, and philanthropist, she has followed her own path, redefining what family means and making a lasting impact on children with disabilities through her work with the DR Family Foundation.

Her journey began at the young age of 15, when she made the bold decision to leave her home and pursue a modeling career in Paris. While many saw her life as glamorous, Michella quickly realized how tough it was to be on her own in such a demanding industry. “I didn’t have the emotional support I needed during those years,” she reflects. “It wasn’t until later in life that I fully understood the importance of having a strong support system.”

Years later, Michella’s life changed again when she became a single mother at 23. Her son, Benjamin, was diagnosed with autism when he was three years old. “Learning about his diagnosis was a difficult moment,” she recalls. “But instead of seeing it as a limitation, I decided to embrace it and find ways to help him thrive.”

Michella poured herself into researching therapies and schools that would be the best fit for Benjamin. “I quickly learned how isolating the world can be for children with disabilities,” she explains. “It’s heartbreaking to watch your child be left out simply because he’s different. I knew I had to do something to change that.”

Her determination led to the founding of the DR Family Foundation, which she co-founded with her fiancé. The foundation’s mission is to provide support for children with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. “We wanted to create a place where kids could feel safe and accepted,” she says. “Our goal is to help every child reach their potential, no matter what challenges they face.”

In addition to the foundation’s work in supporting children, Michella and her fiancé are building a home for children from broken homes and difficult family situations. “It’s more than just a place to live,” she explains. “It’s a community where children can feel loved and supported as they grow.”

The love and support Michella found in her fiancé have been central to her journey. “From the moment we met, he understood how important Benjamin is in my life,” she says. “We connected on a deep level, and he embraced Benjamin like his own. Our relationship has shown me that family doesn’t have to follow a traditional path—it’s built on love and understanding.”

Michella’s personal experiences have also fueled her advocacy for inclusivity in education. “Many schools aren’t prepared to support children with disabilities,” she explains. “Segregating them into special schools only deepens their sense of isolation. All children should be able to grow up together, learning from one another.”

Michella believes that society needs to celebrate diversity and embrace differences from an early age. “We need to teach children that everyone deserves respect, regardless of their abilities,” she emphasizes. “This is how we build stronger, more compassionate communities.”

Benjamin’s progress has been a source of pride and inspiration for Michella. “He’s taught me that resilience and uniqueness are strengths, not weaknesses,” she says. “He’s the reason I am who I am today.”

Through her work with the DR Family Foundation, Michella is determined to help other families facing similar challenges. “I want to give them the support and resources they need to navigate these tough situations,” she explains. “Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, and we’re working to make that a reality.”
