Michael Johnston Eyes Major Franchise Role in Universal’s Next ‘The Mummy’ Film

Published on July 28, 2026

Michael Johnston is reportedly in early negotiations for a major role in Universal Pictures’ upcoming film, The Mummy. The actor is coming off his breakout performance as Bear in Curry Barker’s successful horror film Obsession. Johnston’s potential character has not been revealed, and the discussions remain at an early stage, according to Deadline.

Should an agreement be reached, Johnston would join returning franchise stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah. Fraser and Weisz are expected to reprise their roles as adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell, while Hannah will return as Evelyn’s brother, Jonathan Carnahan.

The new installment will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known collectively as Radio Silence. Their previous work includes Ready or Not, Abigail and two entries in the modern Scream franchise, while David Coggeshall is writing the screenplay.

Johnston previously gained recognition for portraying Corey Bryant in MTV’s Teen Wolf, but Obsession introduced him to a significantly wider audience. The horror film follows Bear, a shy music-store employee whose wish for his longtime crush to fall in love with him produces terrifying consequences.

Joining The Mummy would represent a major career opportunity for Johnston, placing the rising actor alongside the stars of one of Universal’s most recognizable adventure franchises. Although his involvement has not been finalized, the reported negotiations suggest his acclaimed performance in Obsession has already opened the door to significantly larger projects.
