MAJ3STY

Rising star and emerging independent artist Maj3sty is a North Carolina legend in the making. This independent singer-songwriter, recording artist and CEO is not even 30 and has been making moves with the grind, knowledge, and skill of a hip-hop legend. Maj3sty, a former North Carolina Central University Alumni has been a voice of reason in the Raleigh-Durham area. In 2019 he found himself opening at the Crown Complex for Fayetteville State University’s Homecoming. A day or two before the show he tells us how he met Hip-Hop Legend, 9th Wonder and this is what he had to say:

“Honestly, the day I met 9th Wonder, I was going to the Administration because one of my professors had failed me for missing her final exam. I was having difficulty with my health for a few years and that day was hard getting to class. I made it to class 1 to 5 minutes after she had closed the door. I stood there and looked at her, she looked at me, turned her back, leaned up against the door, and started class. I may be getting the timeline mixed up, but that’s what I recall at this moment.

At that time, I was going to leave NCCU. I had had enough of the institution and told myself that college isn’t for me. I had originally attended NCCU in 2011 but I made wrong decisions and then flunked out. It’s embarrassing, but fast forward… I made a promise to my mom that I would get my Bachelor’s Degree. So, I came back to NCCU on a mission, to keep my promise… and I did that… even with almost dying and having health complications… I kept my promise to her.

But… this music… this is me keeping my promise to The Highest God… to My Father… to Abba. When I met 9th Wonder, I was scared lowkey… I saw him around campus so many times and tried to approach him but, he was either on the phone and told me to hold on, told me it wasn’t a good time… or I handed him my information in order to connect with him on music… but I never heard back from him. So time went by… one day while I was standing in this office for my classes, he came in… and I said to myself… ‘just ignore him… there’s no point.’

But then I said to myself… I’m going to try one more time… I’m going to ask him one question… in this man’s eyes I’m probably a nobody, but he’s a Professor here and a Hip Hop legend that I grew up hearing about so I want to walk away knowing that I gave this my best. When he came into the office I looked at him… I acknowledged him and said what’s up but it didn’t seem as if he remembered me. He responded to me and I said to him… ‘I’m opening for Fayetteville State University’s Homecoming at the Crown Complex… any advice?’

He told me to “Pray.” After he said that I said to myself, ‘Pray? That’s it? I already do that… at least 10 times a day or more and when I do pray I’m telling Abba what I’m grateful for.’ I never let those words come out of my mouth.

I told him that I appreciate it and after that, days later I heard he signed two artists who graduated from the same college. Instead of getting mad and hating… I became upset and started questioning myself, my music, my voice, my sound, and if I was even praying right. Going to NCCU is a part of trauma for me. I lost my virginity there, I had my first taste of alcohol there, I smoked my first blunt there, I was molested there, I was abused there, I was hurt there and I also probably hurt some people there as well. It’s a lot.

But, I did pray before my performance and on the way there which wasn’t unusual for me. I just decided to take 9th Wonder’s words as a sign for me to keep doing what I’m doing and chase God, not the world. After that conversation with 9th Wonder, I became a counselor for children, and whenever I think about it now… I’m grateful for the lessons and the small moments like that because although I’m praying a lot, I realized that the quantity of prayer doesn’t compare to the quality and faith that I must exhibit after that. That’s what Abba showed me about that moment. When it comes to prayer, quality over quantity. That encounter with 9th Wonder changed my life for the better and I give all praise to The Most High. If 9th Wonder ever sees this, I want him to know that I appreciate him.”
