Emerging artist Lulu Malaya makes a powerful introduction with her debut single “Time To Fly,” a dynamic blend of pop, hip-hop, and musical theatre that showcases her fearless artistry. The release represents a major milestone, fueled by her lifelong passion for performance and the supportive community that continues to inspire her growth.
“Time To Fly” encapsulates Lulu Malaya‘s multifaceted background. The lyrics were nothing more than ink on paper for years until inspiration struck after the Wicked film arrived in cinemas last year. As she held space for the lyrics of “Defying Gravity,” it inspired a change within her. She decided she could no longer wait for “the perfect moment” to arrive. Instead, she chose to trust her instincts, close her eyes, and leap.
“Time To Fly” announces Lulu Malaya as a commanding new voice in music, effortlessly blending energy, precision, and emotion. The single pulses with inventive rhythms and bold melodic choices, demonstrating an artist unafraid to explore the edges of genre. Lulu’s delivery is magnetic, capturing attention with a mix of strength and vulnerability that feels immediate and personal. Every phrase resonates with clarity and intent, making the track both memorable and replay-worthy. Beyond its musicality, the song conveys a sense of momentum and possibility, hinting at an artist with a clear vision and the confidence to push creative boundaries. It’s a debut that leaves listeners excited for what’s next.
With the buzz from the two Wicked films and Hamilton’s ten-year anniversary, musical theatre enthusiasts have been feasting over the past two years, and Lulu Malaya aims to channel that vibrant energy. Through Tony Award winner Darren Criss’s Los Angeles bar, where live pianists often delve into show tunes, she connected with her producer Josh Jacober and composer David Mahokey. Over the summer, they collaborated in Josh’s home studio to bring the song to life. Poetically, “Time To Fly” and its accompanying music video stem from her enduring love for musical theatre and the supportive community built around it.
Born and raised in the Philippines, now based in Los Angeles with a prior chapter in New York, Lulu Malaya has been a performer throughout her life. For several years, she served as a singer and occasional soloist in the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles. This role opened doors to performances at diverse venues across Southern California, collaborations with Grammy Award-winning songwriter Justin Tranter, and work with LGBTQ+ advocacy group GLAAD. Having thrived in group settings, she is now poised to step into the spotlight solo, ready to take her chance at defying gravity. “Malaya” is the Tagalog word for “free,” a name Lulu adopted during her transition as a constant reminder to embrace her voice and rise above fears or societal judgements.
