Federal prosecutors are using Lil Durk’s travel plans and phone activity to argue that the Chicago rapper tried to leave the country after learning investigators were executing search warrants tied to the murder-for-hire case.
Prosecutors laid out a new timeline in the Lil Durk murder-for-hire trial on Wednesday, September 2, focusing on what happened shortly before the rapper was arrested in Florida in October 2024. According to Complex, FBI Special Agent Cody Burke testified that three separate international flight arrangements connected to Durk were made after a business associate allegedly warned him about federal search warrants.
Burke testified that authorities executed roughly six search warrants early that morning and that Durk’s business associate Jason Smith alerted him soon afterward. Prosecutors then presented records showing one itinerary from Fort Lauderdale through Zurich to Dubai, another from Miami to Dubai and a third private-flight route to Dubai through Turin, Italy.
The government is presenting that travel activity as evidence that Lil Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, intended to flee once he learned the investigation was closing in. Durk has pleaded not guilty, and the claim that the flights amounted to an escape attempt remains part of the prosecution’s case for jurors to evaluate.
Jurors were also shown records involving OTF text-message chains, GPS information and phone activity, including evidence prosecutors say showed Durk changing his number and buying burner phones. Burke testified that Durk was ultimately taken into custody at the private Fixed-Base Operator area of the Fort Lauderdale airport, while federal authorities said at the time of his arrest that he had been booked on three international flights.
The testimony comes as prosecutors continue trying to connect Durk to the August 2022 shooting that killed Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson while allegedly targeting Quando Rondo. The government alleges the shooting was retaliation connected to the 2020 killing of King Von, while Durk’s defense has argued that cooperating witnesses and other members of his circle were responsible for the alleged plot.
The flight evidence is especially significant because it gives prosecutors a way to argue consciousness of guilt without relying solely on disputed interpretations of lyrics or music videos. Durk’s attorneys have previously challenged the government’s effort to use his creative work as evidence, an issue that has already become a major point in the ongoing federal trial.
Durk faces federal charges including conspiracy and murder-for-hire resulting in death. If convicted on the most serious counts, he could face life in federal prison, but he is presumed innocent unless and until the government proves its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
