In comparison to Neyo’s “Because of You” soundtrack, which voiced a positive obsession with a romantic partner, LAW‘s “Because of You” highlights the negative impact a romantic encounter has had on her life.
Pop/R&B singer “(L)adies (A)lways (W)in” or LAW released her “Because of You” music video on June 5, 2022. In the heart of the ocean singing through her heartbreak, power and strength are exuded through the camera angles, Law herself, and the ocean setting.
Throughout most of the music video, the camera angle is either going partially underneath the water or underwater. When it goes partially underneath, LAW looks down at the camera putting her in a position or angle of power. When the camera goes all the way beneath, LAW is also underwater. In my opinion, her being fully submerged represents her emotions taking over. Her strength is shown as she rises through. Hence her opening up her arms looking up at the sun, floating on top of the water, and becoming in sync with the flow of the water. The back and forth of her submerging, and the camera going underneath, show that the emotions she feels are intense but not stronger than her.
For the most part, the camera angle and the endlessness of the ocean put LAW in the center. The center represents stability and balance. She taps into her emotions, bodaciously expressing them, feeling their ups and downs, yet remaining centered. Being centered in the ocean highlights her stance on women (ladies always win) empowerment. Feminine energy (women empowerment) represents flow and many directions, just like the ocean.
In the song, she says, “And I don’t trust nobody because of you, and every time I try, I lose my mind again.”
She’s speaking to someone who caused her a lot of emotional pain and doesn’t know which direction to turn down. The ocean emphasizes her feelings of confusion and misdirection because it symbolizes boundlessness.
Her notes also change throughout the song. When she feels strongly about something, for example, when she says “because of YOU,” you hear that frustration in her voice. On the other hand, her voice gets timid when she speaks about something delicate, like her not loving herself anymore.
We all have a reason behind why we do the things we do, and LAW definitely knows her why. Her facial expressions, voice, and words all graciously intertwine because they reveal her brokenness. The brokenness that she makes looks whole and distinctive at the same time. After all, how many pianos have you seen being played in the ocean?! Genius.
