Kai McGarry Makes an Ambitious Arrival With Debut Concept Album ‘Train’

At just 18 years old, Kansas City singer, songwriter and producer Kai McGarry is introducing himself on a larger scale with Train, an 11-track debut concept album built around creative rupture, self-reflection and the difficult process of moving forward.

Kai McGarry’s musical foundation began long before Train. Born in Kansas City and shaped by formative years in Mill Valley, California, McGarry developed an early connection to jazz and began drumming before he could walk. That foundation eventually expanded into the warmth of ’70s soul, alternative pop, hip-hop and R&B, giving him a musical vocabulary where genre matters less than the emotion and ideas holding a record together.

By the age of 12, McGarry had already written, performed, recorded, mixed and mastered a full-length album with another young artist he met in Mill Valley. During those years, he also began teaching himself instruments beyond the drums and discovered a fascination with production.

That combination of musicianship and curiosity ultimately became central to his work, allowing pop, R&B, hip-hop and even Latin-influenced production to coexist naturally within the same creative space.

That wide-ranging background comes together on Train, McGarry’s first full-length solo studio release. Structured as a true concept album, the 11-track project follows the dissolution of a creative partnership and the psychological aftermath that follows, moving through an ambient and cinematic opening into frustration, confrontation, hubris and eventually a sense of hard-earned clarity.

The album was intentionally written and recorded to be experienced in sequence, allowing its emotional progression to unfold as one continuous journey rather than a collection of disconnected songs.

What gives Train additional weight is the level of self-awareness behind its construction. McGarry turns personal conflict into something structural, using the production and sequencing to mirror the emotional shifts taking place throughout the record. The ending deliberately avoids presenting everything as neatly resolved. Instead, Train circles back toward its beginning, with subway doors opening and Huntington Avenue still presented as the next stop. It is an unusually reflective conclusion for an artist still at the beginning of his career.
