Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Sentenced to Life Plus 30 Years, to Forfeit $12.6B

Mexican drug kingpin and escape artist Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was sentenced Wednesday to life behind bars in a U.S. prison, expressing no remorse over his conviction for a massive drug conspiracy that spread murder and mayhem for more than two decades.

The term – life plus 30 years – was a foregone conclusion. The guilty verdict on drug-trafficking charges in February triggered a mandatory sentence of life without parole.

Guzman will also be required to forfeit $12.6 billion. In what could be his last time addressing the public before he is shipped to Colorado’s Supermax prison, El Chapo told the courtroom “there was no justice here.”

Guzman’s attorney, Mariel Colon says that the drug lord is optimistic that he can appeal his sentencing. But Colon was also aware of the loftiness of an appeal saying that if an appeal isn’t successful, “then this will be the last time the public will see El Chapo,” and “could be potentially also the last time El Chapo could see his wife.”
