Jhené Aiko is bringing Kendrick Lamar back into her musical orbit on Westside Whimsy, with the longtime collaborators reconnecting on a new song nearly 13 years after their last formal pairing.
Jhené Aiko has revealed the 20-song track-list for her fourth studio album, Westside Whimsy, and Kendrick Lamar appears on the track “So Good.” The album is set to arrive Friday, September 11, via Def Jam Recordings, according to Complex.
The collaboration marks another chapter in a history that stretches back to Lamar’s 2010 project Overly Dedicated, where Aiko appeared on “Growing Apart (To Get Closer).” They later teamed up for “Stay Ready (What a Life)” on Aiko’s 2013 EP Sail Out, making “So Good” their first formal collaboration in nearly 13 years.
Lamar is one of several guests on Westside Whimsy, alongside Larry June, Ab-Soul, Tyga and OHMA. June appears on “Neighbors,” extending his recent creative connection with Aiko after the pair linked on the “California Dream” visual released in August.
Aiko has framed the new album around her California roots, drawing inspiration from 1990s West Coast car culture, surfing, beaches and the state’s laid-back atmosphere. The title first surfaced publicly earlier this year as part of an Erewhon smoothie collaboration before becoming central to the album rollout.
Westside Whimsy will be Aiko’s first full-length studio album since 2020’s Chilombo, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went on to earn an Album of the Year nomination at the Grammys. The six-year gap has made the new project one of her most significant releases in years.
With “So Good,” Aiko is pairing two distinct voices from the West Coast on a project already built around California identity. The full album arrives September 11, giving listeners their first chance to hear how the renewed Kendrick Lamar collaboration fits into the 20-track set.
