Exclusive Interview: Jxck Wolf

What is your name and what city do you rep?

Jxck Wolf, Toronto Canada

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?

I wanted to get away from the stress the city so I decided to set up a small studio in bali Indonesia and work on my craft. I have been making music my whole life but finally I decided I should follow my true passion and release my music. I quit my job, moved to the island and called it “Chase The Sun”

What is unique about you and your music?

I don’t box myself in as a producer. I don’t say “I only make this type of music and that’s who I am.” I let go of any story I have about myself as an artist and create freely with out labeling. I make what I feel on the spot. Focusing first on emotion. “How does it make me feel when I hear this?” I’ll always think from this standpoint as a creator.

What shaped your music?

I had a lot of musical influences from my parents growing up. I remember dancing around the living room to Michael Jackson’s thriller at 3 and a half years old. But then my mom putting on “the clash” and Bruce Springsteen, Marvin Gaye, Black Sabbath, AC/DC. All very different sonics. Later I ended up listening to punk rock. Bands like anti-flag, NOFX and operation ivy. Very conscious punk led me into conscious hiphop like Public enemy, then later started group home, Nas, NWA, Doctor Dre. And Wu-Tang Clan.

Me and my friends were playing in a punk band and we switched all our efforts to recording music and that’s when I fell in love with the MPC.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

it was always my passion since I started playing with a book that had a touch piano attached to it as a kid. I worked my first job in a butcher shop at 13 (lied about my age to get the job) to buy buy my first used guitar amp.

I remember my step dad sitting me down and telling me that I would never be a rockstar and I should do something more practical. Which later turned into a career designing shoes. But I never stopped making beats and refining my skills and learning about producing. On my way back from China in quarantine from my previous job I told myself it’s time to “do you” and I used the same “emotion formula” I used to create previously. I applied it to the music and some magic started happening. I sent my first couple tracks out to some other up and coming artists and we started creating some fire tracks. I sent the first 4 to radio stations and was able to get the first one on cbc radio, Marvin’s room in Canada then I noticed they were being played live on Iheart radio and even got my track playing in Puma stores internationally. After being relentless and not giving up after being rejected many times there was some success at the end of it. This inspired me to keep grinding.

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to all types of music.

I don’t limit myself to one specific genre but I’ve always had a soft spot for hip hop and R&B

What inspires you to write music?

I definitely am inspired to move people. A good song can change your day or lift you up when you are feeling down. I love how music has such power and I love creating vibes that can make people feel good. We are all vibrations and to be able to send out positive vibes you can affect people on a physiological level. When I create I put my emotions and feelings into the record and my hope is that I can make you feel as it transpires.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

I like exploring and traveling to new places. I find it also fuels my creativity. Meeting new people, having new experiences, also seeing things from other peoples perspective. This helps me connect with people on an emotional level and have a deeper insight into myself.

Happiness to you is…

Happiness to me is being able to spend time with my family and create freely. I’m grateful to be able to make music every and enjoy what I do.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

Listen to as many different sources of music as possible, this will help you create more diverse pieces. Also try to be in the moment as much as possible this is where you will find the best pockets of creative energy.

Tell us about your upcoming projects…

I’m currently working on some music for film and television. As well as building with a couple of artists on a couple new singles to be released shortly.

Where do we find you music / music projects?

you can check out my music on all streaming platforms under Jxck wolf (with an X)

Any last words for the readers?

Good things can happen when you keep grinding! Peace ✌️
