Drake isn’t letting his apparent gambling ‘curse’ stop him from betting big bucks.
A couple of weeks after losing more than $500,000 on a boxing match, the God’s Plan rapper revealed he placed a $1million bet on the NBA finals and the Stanley Cup, backing the Dallas Mavericks and Edmonton Oilers respectively.
‘Picks are in @stake,’ he wrote on Instagram Thursday, tagging the cryptocurrency platform he sponsors.
‘Dallas cause I’m a Texan,’ the musician explained, seemingly referencing the fact he owns a ranch in the Lone Star State.
‘Oilers are self explanatory,’ the Canadian added.
Drake placed two separate bets, worth $500k each. Should Luka Doncic and the Mavs defeat the Boston Celtics, he’ll net $1.375m, while a win for the Oilers against the Florida Panthers will earn the rapper $1.025m.
It comes less than three weeks after the Nice For What hitmaker suffered a major loss when he bet on Tyson Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk.
The Ukrainian beat Fury by split decision in Saudi Arabia to become the first undisputed heavyweight boxing champion in 24 years last month.
It was bad news for Drake, however, who would have collected just over $1million if the Brit emerged victorious.
Fans on social media regularly joke that Drake is ‘cursed’ having previously lost a six-figure sum after Anthony Joshua’s knockout win over Francis Ngannou, an eye-watering $700,000 after Dricus Du Plessis beat Sean Strickland at UFC 297.
Some fans thought the curse had been lifted when Drake bet a hefty $1m on Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup final against France.
Although Lionel Messi’s team prevailed, they won on penalties, which meant Drake’s bet for them to win inside 90 minutes ultimately lost.
He has found success gambling on the Super Bowl though, and most recently picked up a major win when he backed the Kansas City Chiefs.
‘I can’t bet against the Swifties [Taylor Swift fans]’, Drake said when explaining why he had picked the Chiefs to beat the 49ers.
He was rewarded with a huge seven-figure payout after backing Travis Kelce – and his girlfriend, Taylor Swift.
