DJ Akademiks turned his ongoing coverage of Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire case into a visual bit, appearing on stream in a judge’s wig and robe while discussing the proceedings.
DJ Akademiks’ Lil Durk trial coverage took a theatrical turn as the media personality dressed in a judicial costume while breaking down developments in the Los Angeles federal case. Complex reported that Akademiks wore the wig and robe during a recent livestream focused on the trial, which began on August 24.
Akademiks has been following the case closely from outside the courtroom, offering commentary to his livestream audience as testimony and legal arguments continue. The costume leaned into the courtroom theme of his coverage, though Akademiks is not part of the proceedings and has not been attending the trial in person.

Lil Durk, whose legal name is Durk Devontay Banks, is on trial alongside co-defendants DeAndre “OTF Dede” Wilson and David “Browneyez” Lindsey. All three have pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from an alleged 2022 plot targeting Quando Rondo that resulted in the death of Rondo’s cousin, Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson.
Federal prosecutors allege the shooting was carried out in retaliation for the 2020 death of King Von. The government has relied in part on testimony from associates, including Kacey “OTF Jam” Hester, while Durk’s defense has disputed the prosecution’s theory and argued that Kavon “OTF Vonni” Grant was responsible for directing the alleged scheme.
The case has also intersected with Akademiks’ own media work. Before trial, a judge allowed prosecutors to use an excerpt from a 2021 Akademiks interview involving 6ix9ine and Wack 100, and Durk’s attorneys have separately sought to introduce a portion of Durk’s 2023 interview with Akademiks as part of the defense case.
Durk faces five federal charges and could receive a life sentence if convicted. As the trial moves forward, Akademiks’ streams have become one of several places where hip-hop audiences are following the case, with his judge costume adding an unmistakable visual flourish to his latest round of commentary.
