Kurrent Q is not just another rising star in the rap scene; he’s a force of creativity and authenticity. Born in Trinidad and Tobago on February 2nd, 1986, his musical journey began amidst the rich cultural tapestry of Soca, Dancehall, and Calypso. These early influences, coupled with his mother’s love for steel pan music and the vibrant backyard parties of his childhood, laid the groundwork for his deep-seated passion for music.
Transitioning to the United States in the early 1990s, Kurrent Q found himself immersed in the musical melting pot of New York City before settling in Maryland. Despite facing personal challenges, including the loss of his mother to kidney cancer, music became his sanctuary—a means to express himself and connect with others. With a tenacity fueled by fatherhood and a determination to carve out a unique space in the rap game, Kurrent Q’s style seamlessly blends his New York flow with his Caribbean roots, evident in tracks like “Dead Bodies” and “POE.”
Urban$ound team got to sit down with Kurrent Q, delving deeper into his musical journey and creative process:
Urban$ound team: Can you tell us about your journey into music? What inspired you to start creating music, and how did you develop your unique style?
Kurrent Q: Well, my musical journey began in Trinidad and Tobago, where the rhythms of calypso and steel pan captivated me. Moving to the U.S., artists like Ice Cube, Tupac, and Nas influenced me deeply with their culturally rich music. Today’s music industry lacks originality, and I strive to bring my Caribbean background into my music—adding flashes of pro-blackness, spirituality, humor, charisma, and realism.
Urban$ound team: Your lyrics often touch on personal experiences and societal issues. How do you approach writing your songs, and what messages or emotions do you aim to convey through your music?
Kurrent Q: When I write, I draw from personal experiences and observe my environment. Sometimes my music conveys rage—a powerful emotion that allows me to express hard truths and messages of resilience and empowerment.
Urban$ound team: Being from the DMV area, how has the culture influenced your music and career? Are there specific aspects that have shaped your sound?
Kurrent Q: Growing up in the DMV area exposed me to Go-Go music, with its distinct drum patterns and lively beats. It deeply influenced my sound during my formative years in the 90s, sparking aspirations to be part of that musical legacy.
Urban$ound team: Could you describe your creative process when writing and producing music? Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get in the right mindset?
Kurrent Q: I start by listening to the beat, letting it guide my flow. Older music inspires me and sets the tone for how I want to sound. I don’t have rituals per se, just habits that help me stay focused and creative.
Urban$ound team: What do you consider your biggest musical accomplishments so far? Is there a particular song or project that you’re most proud of?
Kurrent Q: Meeting celebrities and legends has been notable, but musically, “Dead Bodies” and the entirety of “Elite Minded Vol 1” stand out as my proudest achievements.
Urban$ound team: Are there any artists who have been particularly influential or inspiring to you? How have they impacted your approach to music?
Kurrent Q: Artists like Digital Underground, Tupac, Nas, Ice Cube, and many others have shaped my music profoundly. Their artistry inspired me to maintain depth and substance in my work.
Urban$ound team: Can you share any current projects or collaborations you’re working on? What can your fans look forward to in terms of new music or upcoming releases?
Kurrent Q: “Elite Minded Vol 2” drops on August 31st this year. Fans can expect the same flow, punchlines, and heavy lyrics they love, with collaborations featuring DJLightsOut.
Urban$ound team: In your opinion, how do you think the music industry is evolving, especially for new up-and-coming artists like yourself? What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
Kurrent Q: I’m concerned about the industry’s direction—it seems talent and positivity are often sidelined. I’ve faced challenges like fake contracts and unreliable promotion, but I’ve overcome them with patience, awareness, and a strategic approach.
Urban$ound team: Your music blends different genres and sounds. How do you experiment with your style while staying true to your artistic vision?
Kurrent Q: Styles evolve yearly, but I focus on perfecting my sound rather than following trends. Each song takes creative liberties while maintaining the essence that keeps fans coming back.
Urban$ound team: Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations as an artist? Where do you see yourself in the next few years, both creatively and professionally?
Kurrent Q: Follow me on Instagram @KurrentQ to see where I’ve come from and where I’m going. In the next few years, I aim to bring fun and meaning back into music, keeping my creativity and impact alive.
