From Lomé, Togo to Brussels, Belgium, rising artist Moutabwoy is carving his own path in the global music scene. His latest single, “Dans la Gova,” just charted at #47 on the iTunes Top 100 USA Pop Chart, marking a major milestone in his journey. With a sound that fuses Afro-dancehall, hip-hop, reggae, and pop, he’s creating music that resonates far beyond genre lines. We caught up with Moutabwoy to talk about his journey, creative process, and what’s next.
Q: You’ve been in the music industry for over a decade now. What’s kept you going?
The purpose of my music has always been to inspire, uplift, and connect people. I’ve stayed motivated by that mission and by staying true to my sound. Music isn’t just something I do—it’s who I am. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but the growth and the connection with listeners make it worth it.
Q: How would you describe your sound?
It’s a blend of Afro-dancehall and hip-hop, but it’s also personal. I like to tell real stories—things people can relate to—but keep the energy high. My music is about movement, both physically and emotionally.
Q: Let’s talk about “Dans la Gova.” What inspired that track?
“Dans la Gova” came from this idea of forward motion—literally and metaphorically. The phrase is a local term that represents freedom, energy, and that unstoppable drive. I wanted the song to feel like that: powerful, confident, and alive.
Q: What was the vibe like when recording and shooting the video?
The studio energy was electric. I like to vibe with the beat first, freestyle melodies, and then refine the lyrics. For the video, we kept that same energy going. We had a spontaneous dance-off on set—it was just good energy all around. Everyone was locked in, and it shows in the final product.
Q: There’s a standout line in the track: “No distance, baby slide on.” What does that mean to you?
It’s about connection and not letting anything get in the way of that. Whether it’s love, ambition, or your purpose—don’t hesitate. Just slide through, show up, and keep it moving.
Q: You’ve accomplished a lot already—radio deals, international collabs, awards. What’s next for you?
I’m focused on taking things to a global level. I see myself on major stages, charting on Billboard, and building Mugisha Entertainment into a powerhouse label that supports other artists too. I want to push Afro-dancehall and hip-hop in new directions.
Q: If you could collaborate with any artist right now, who would it be?
Wizkid is definitely top of the list—his ability to blend Afrobeat with global sounds is unmatched. Burna Boy, Shatta Wale, and Drake are up there too. They all bring something unique, and I think we’d create something timeless together.
Q: What advice would you give to up-and-coming artists trying to break into the scene?
Be yourself. Be consistent. Treat your music like a business. Learn the game, build real relationships, and never stop improving. It’s not just about talent—it’s about mindset and staying focused.
Q: Any final thoughts for your listeners?
Just gratitude. I appreciate everyone who’s been rocking with me so far. I’m not here for a quick moment—I’m here to build something real. This is just the beginning.
