Big Mooky Speaks on Music, Community, and the Power of Coming Together

Hip-hop artist Big Mooky recently took part in a powerful community-driven charity show that brought together artists, fans, and neighbors for a cause close to the heart. In this interview, he opens up about how the event came together, the emotions that filled the room, and how giving back through music shapes his artistry.

Q: Can you walk us through how the charity show came together and how you got involved?
Big Mooky: This show was about helping somebody in our community. I’d call it a community show—charity just doesn’t sound right. A fellow artist and friend of mine has a young son with cancer. I knew he was going through a hard time with his son so I wanted to help out, it’s as simple as that. I was originally just going to book him for a show, then I thought, why not make it so all of the money goes to his son’s treatment? Cancer has plagued the lives of countless people I know and taken folks that were truly close to me, so putting together a show that was anti-cancer and pro-community just felt right.

Q: What was the cause or organization behind the event, and why was it important for you to support?
Big Mooky: The cause was really personal. It was about standing with my friend and his son who’s battling cancer. Beyond that, it was about the bigger picture—raising awareness, spreading love, and uniting against something that affects so many families. It was bigger than just music; it was about showing up when someone needs you.

Q: How did performing at a charity show differ from your regular performances?
Big Mooky: Putting this show together was really something special. Every single artist involved agreed to perform with no questions asked—they were just happy to support. The love shown for the cause was truly astounding and that energy reflected during every set, including mine. It felt different, more intentional, more raw.

Q: Were there any standout moments during your set that really stuck with you?
Big Mooky: There were a lot of special moments, but yelling “f*ck cancer” with the crowd definitely stood out. The energy was unreal. And it’s been a while since I’ve heard my name chanted by a crowd—maybe only the second time in my career. Those are moments you don’t forget.

Q: How did the crowd’s energy at the charity show compare to your usual shows?
Big Mooky: It was pure love. Normally you get energy because people vibe with the music. But this time, it was like everyone was united by the same mission. You could feel it. The connection was stronger, almost spiritual.

Q: Did you collaborate with any other artists or community members for this event?
Big Mooky: Absolutely. I got to work with artists I truly respect—Jooselord, Brassious Monk, Lorenzo Black, Tweekeen. These guys are masters at what they do, and I’m proud to call them my friends. Performing alongside them was a real honor.

Q: What impact do you hope the show had on the people who attended and the community it supported?
Big Mooky: I hope it showed people the power of unity. That we can come together, make art, and also make a difference. I wanted people to leave knowing this wasn’t about clout—it was about love, support, and fighting for something real.

Q: How does giving back through music influence your artistry and message?
Big Mooky: I always talk about spreading peace and love in my lyrics and public appearances, and I rhyme with a cause. This show was a rare chance to truly live that out. It showed people we do this for the sake of others. That’s what being an artist means to me.

Q: What did you personally take away from being part of the charity show?
Big Mooky: That moments like these are bigger than music. Seeing the love, the support, the energy—it reminded me why I do this in the first place. It grounded me.

Q: After experiencing this, do you plan on doing more charity-based performances in the future?
Big Mooky: Without a doubt. I definitely think I’ll host at least one community show a year. Something about giving back, showing love, and standing with people in need—it just feels right.
