An Interview with Rom Lawrell: Insights into His Creative Process and Latest Project

Lawrell is an emerging artist with roots in both Chicago and Los Angeles, blending the influences of these two iconic cities to create a unique sound that resonates with listeners worldwide. In this interview, Rom shares his journey, inspirations, and the meaning behind his latest project, offering a glimpse into the mind of a creative who is determined to make his mark on the music industry.

Interview:

Q: What is your name and what city do you represent?

Rom Lawrell: I go by the name Rom Lawrell and I represent both Chicago and LA. I bring the best of both cities into my music, but most of my influences come from my Chicago roots. It’s the city that raised me and taught me everything that I know.

Q: What’s your most memorable moment of this year 2024 so far?

Rom Lawrell: The most memorable moments of 2024 so far for me have been a lot of growth, creativity, and working on finalizing my LP. Oh, having the opportunity to collaborate with Puma and Gap was very memorable as well.

Q: What’s the meaning behind your latest project and the title?

Rom Lawrell: The meaning behind my LP started with my first single, “Body Positive,” which is a love letter to people all over the world who struggle with accepting themselves as they are. Through my journey of learning to love my body, I wanted to empower others to feel good about themselves and create a space where you can feel confident and don’t have to hide who you are.

The title is a concept inspired by Isaac Newton, based on the color spectrum. These are the colors our eyes see and everything is a variation of these colors. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet – As someone who loves color, I wanted to play off that. Which led me to title the project ROYGBIV.

Q: Any upcoming projects that you can speak on?

Rom Lawrell: Aside from this project, I’m always working on new music and brainstorming on how to bring the visuals to life. I just got confirmed to stream at LA Comic Con this October, which is exciting because I’m a gamer and enjoy anything Tech. I’m planning to do more performances before this year ends.

Q: What goals would you like to accomplish in the coming year?

Rom Lawrell: In the coming year, I want to reach more people with my music, perform in new cities, and continue to push the boundaries with my art.

Q: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would that be?

Rom Lawrell: So, here are my top artists I would love to collaborate with, and believe we could create something special together. I’d love to work with Beyoncé, Victoria Monét, Chloe Bailey, and Kaytranada. They inspire me on so many levels. I think writing something for them could be cool as well.

Q: At the end of the day, all artists have something that drives them. What’s your daily motivation?

Rom Lawrell: My daily motivation comes from my passion for music and my desire to represent and uplift underrepresented communities. I’ve always been such a creative at heart, so knowing that my music can make a difference keeps me going.

Q: When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

Rom Lawrell: I realized I was going to make music professionally when I watched Prince in this movie called, Purple Rain. Growing up I was always the guy singing at the lunch tables and doing concerts in my room. I remember recreating Barney’s songs and performing them for my grandmother. At a very young age, my family resonated with my talent, so that pushed me to continue to pursue music.

Q: Any last words for the readers?

Rom Lawrell: Always believe in your dreams and never be afraid to push the envelope to break boundaries. Your uniqueness is your power, and you have a space in this world. Stream my new project, ROYGBIV out now on all platforms!
